Harvey Gantt was the first African American student to attend Clemson. The marker notes that he was able to attend after he had made charges against the college for not allowing him to attend. It notes that Gantt was admitted in 1963 and graduated in 1965 with Honors.

The principles of his father and other early memebers of Clemson College should, in his mind, remain the stautus quo.
